Sri Lanka is a beautiful destination known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. To enjoy all that this island nation has to offer, you will need to obtain a Tourist Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This process is straightforward and can typically be completed online, making it easy for you to plan your short visit to Sri Lanka.
Eligibility and Application for the ETA
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) allows you to enter Sri Lanka for tourism, business, or transit purposes. You must have a valid passport with at least six months’ validity remaining from your arrival date.
Citizens from several countries can apply for the ETA online. In certain cases, individuals may be exempt from this requirement based on bilateral agreements. It’s essential to confirm your eligibility before starting your application.
The ETA Application Process
Applying for an ETA is a simple process. First, visit the official ETA application website. You’ll need to select the type of ETA you require—Tourist, Business, or Transit Visa.
Next, complete the application form with your personal information and travel details. Make sure all your information is accurate. Once you submit your application, you should receive ETA approval within a few days. After receiving your ETA, print it out and present it upon arrival in Sri Lanka.
Visa Costs and Processing Times
The following table outlines the ETA processing fees and options available:
| Visa Type | South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Countries | All Other Countries | Children Under 12 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist Visa (Double Entry, 30 days) | US$ 20 | US$ 50 | Free |
| Business Visa (Multiple Entry, 30 days) | US$ 30 | US$ 55 | Free |
| Transit Visa (Single Entry, 2 days) | Free | Free | Free |
Standard and Emergency Processing
Standard processing for an ETA usually takes around 24 hours. Emergency processing options are available for those requiring immediate travel, with approval granted in as little as one hour, though additional fees may apply.
Visa Validity and Extensions
Your tourist visa is typically valid for 30 days from your date of entry. Extensions can be requested for a total stay of up to 270 days. Applications must be submitted to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, either online or in person.
